Tired? Feeling drained? Have low energy? No longer enjoy doing things that you used to have excitement about? Can’t sleep? Sleep too much? Self-blame much? Irritable? The list could go on and on. These are a few things you may notice if you are feeling depression. These are also things that we experience when life happens to us, death, loss of job or relationship, long-term illness, etc. However, if you are experiencing any of these daily, or almost every day for two weeks or more, it is time to seek help because you may suffer from depression.
Some may question, “Is there something wrong with me if I have depression?” The answer is “no”. Many people deal with depression and live a “normal” (what is that) life. Consider depression like any other illness, you can’t determine who it will happen to, and you simply need to treat it, just like asthma, diabetes, or the flu. Shame for having depression is misplaced. There is nothing to be ashamed of and nothing to hide.
It's Different for Guys
As a male, society tells you that you need to “deal with your stuff”, but sometimes your stuff is weighing you down. If your stuff is too much to handle alone, get help. So, to put a different spin on it, deal with your stuff by getting the help you need and finding a listening ear, creating a treatment plan that will work for you, and get back to enjoying life and the people you love.
Depression vs. Masculinity
Depression is not a weakness. It is a mental health condition. Just like people have substance use disorder, bi-polar disorder, or any other mental health condition, depression should be treated and not hidden. I truly believe you only “suffer” from depression when you fail to treat depression. Your strength is not in what you can deal with without help, but in dealing with things in a healthy manner while getting help when needed.
Remember:
There is nothing wrong with you (many have depression and there is no reason to be ashamed)
Even men can de depressed (find the help you need)
Your greatest strength is realizing you need help and seeking it
Signs to note:
Loss of interest in things that used to bring pleasure
Difficulty concentrating
Not sleeping or sleeping too much
Lack of energy
Thoughts of death or suicide
If any of these or other symptoms are present and persist for 14 days or more, reach out for help.
Many who experience depression have indicated they feel alone, even in a crowd of people. They don’t believe they can divulge all of their feelings to others for fear that “they won’t understand."
